A special assembly on the International Day of Sign Languages

23-09-2022

The International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September. The day is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. Sign language gives people, who are hard of hearing, a medium to converse. As the name suggests, this day aims to spread awareness regarding the importance of sign language in the realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.

EIS organized a special assembly and invited Ms. Jayashree Naik - an expert in sign languages who is also associated with the Deaf and speech impaired school in Pune and has 30 years of experience with special children as a sports and craft teacher.

She has organized training, workshops, and competitions for children with special needs for Table Tennis, Yoga, Drawing, and Athletics. Children have won many awards and trophies under her guidance.

During assembly time she spoke about the importance of the day and also showed some basic words and sentences in sign language. EIS students were excited and tried conversing in sign language with her. She also presented the National Anthem in sign language which was a thrilling experience for EIS students.

The impact of the session was so wonderful that teachers observed EIS students practicing sign language throughout the day.

EIS students carried a great experience with them today.
