Palkhi Celebration in Educon International School

21-06-2022

Maharashtra, the land of saints and legendary rulers has a great tradition of warkaris, the devotees of lord Vitthal.

Palkhi festival showcases the distinctive feature of the Maharashtrian culture. This is a 1000-year-old tradition, which has been followed by the warkaris (people who follow the wari, a fundamental ritual). People perform collective singing, dancing, chanting (Dnyanba-Tukaram in what are called as Dindis or organised group of warkaris) to the holy town of Pandharpur in Hindu months of Ashadh (June-July) and Karthik (November-December).

Educon International School took a wonderful opportunity of presenting the replica of traditional Palkhi in school premises. The enthusiasm filled the whole school when EIS students came to school dressed up as warkaries carrying saffron flags, palkhi and Tulsi saplings in ‘tulsivrundavans’.

This event was brought into existence to sensitize the young minds with traditional integrity amongst each other. The teachers popped in and made realistic props to give the event a realistic look. The traditional drapery, the colorful props and the sound of Tal, mridang, bhajan, abhang and bharud added to its beauty.

The informative PowerPoint presentations about the tradition of Wari, Saint Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram Palakhi, and how wari teaches unity, devotion and value of classless society was explained to students. The divine music and gajar mesmerized the whole School campus.

The participation of all children in this Palkhi event gave a message of social awareness and a feeling of oneness.
